The Power of Words

For this post I have two short reflections that show the power of words and language. These reflections I can relate with on a personal level through my first year of grad school.

This first post makes reference to giving up certain language for Lent. Most of us reading this probably do not need to take this literally. I have learned in one of my courses that we all make assumptions about others even when we have good intentions and we can use this knowledge to try to improve how we relate to others.

This quote stuck out for me in the second article, this post is more likely to have many meanings for different people. This quote caught me personally because of the connection to optimism and the beginning of being an adult. “Be careful which stories you expose yourself to.

The meanings you find, and the stories you hear, will have an impact on how optimistic you are: it’s how we evolved. … If you do not know how to draw positive meaning from what happens in life, the neural pathways you need to appreciate good news will never fire up.”
