I am not religious; I didn’t know what Lent was until I came to university. I am, however, open to the religion of others, and I enjoy getting to know Megan because every year she seems to teach me about a new religious event.
From what I’ve gathered over the last two years, people generally give up something for lent like coffee or smoking. What I enjoy hearing about more are the people who decide to add something to their life, or reflect upon who they are. Something about the notions of adding and reflecting are appealing to me, which is the path I chose to take once again this year.
My thoughts lately have been this: What am I going to do for the rest of my life? What career path will lead me to happiness? To me, it’s not about how much money I make, it’s about whether or not what I do will be satisfying and leave me feeling fulfilled, like I’ve accomplished something great. While I haven’t figured out a specific career yet, I have narrowed down the field; I would like to work for a non-profit organization.
The goal for myself during lent is to research different careers within these organizations, from both Canadian and American organizations. I’ve been considering the field for awhile now, but there’s a website/catalog that gave me the idea to do this now.
I’ve always wanted to go on a trip where I could explore a new country and help people at the same time. Some of these trips can be really expensive, and sometimes you’d only be there for a week, so my mindset has usually been “Is it worth all that money at this point in my life?” … After doing some summer job research with a friend of mine at the Career Centre, we came across volunteer summer opportunities in the forms of catalogs that show you where you could go and what you could do. My misconception of simply going to build a school or house for a week has been way off base! According to Projects-Abroad, I could go somewhere for a month and do other things to help, like teach English to young children AND also do something I’ve always wanted to try, like journalism.
